There are many breeds of dog in the world. Some large, some medium, and some very small. And there are many considerations for choosing a good dog as a pet. Such as, do you have children? Does anyone in your family have an allergy, like asthma for instance? Do you want the dog to also be a guard dog? Do you want a dog with long or short hair? As dogs are often shedding their hair.

Dogs have different kinds of personalities. Some have aggressive behavior, others more friendly orientated.

You can also have a mixed or hybrid variety, where the puppy comes from two differnt types of dog.

Here are some main considerations to ponder when choosing your new dog.

Large or small?

If you live in a modest house. There will not be alot of room for the dog. And if there is almost no lawn or parks nearby, this would make having a large breed problematic. Also, a bigger dog is more expensive to keep due to an increased food bill, and medications are usually also more.

Do You Have Time For Your Dog?

Some breeds require more time involvement. Such as the larger breeds need to have exercise regularly. Whereas smaller breeds can get probably enough exercise running around the house. Also, with long haired breeds, regular grooming is required. For instance, brushing and clipping the hair. If this is not done, the coat will tangle and look very untidy, making it harder to wash.

Short haired breeds, on the other hand, do not need brushing and the problem of fleas and ticks is much easier to manage.

Do You Have Allergies?

My mother is mildly allergic to dog and cat hair, so we tended to only have breeds with short hair or that shed their hair very lightly when I was growing up. This information is very important, because having a dog that sheds alot living with people with strong allergic reactions to dog hair could even be potentially dangerous. So please choose carefully if this is the case.

Are Children A Factor In Your Home?

Do you either have children or do they frequently visit your house?

Dogs and puppies are very popular with children. And in many respects, children are well liked by dogs.

That being said, some dogs can become aggressive towards children at mealtimes, and aggressive to strange children.

Why this happens is because they will see them as equal or lower than themselves in the peeking order.

As you know, kids can play play and some dogs will tolerate rough play, others however will not, and may respond by biting in defense.

Training Anyone?

Another consideration is if you want a breedthat is easy to train. Most dogs require some kind of training, so it depends upon if you have the required time and patience to do this.

Usually this come down to intelligence. Some dogs are literally more intelligent than others.

Protection Anyone?

Finally, do you want protection? Dogs can be used for both personal and property protection. Either a small dog which will bark when there is an intruder, or a bigger dog, which will hopefully scrare off the burgular or attacker.

There are so many different breeds, with all kinds of size ranges, like hunting dogs, from a terrier to a german shepherd, toy dogs, white dogs, black dogs, dogs from all over the world, american dogs, asian dogs. There's bull dogs, dogs that catch a frisbee, purebred and non purebred, all for sale.

And any can be yours.

Below is a list from a-z of the many breeds of dogs that are available. Eventually I will have info and facts and pictures about each breed. This will take quite a while to compile. But a comprehensive list should still be useful to you for now....
